To be eligible for Polish citizenship, you must meet two types of conditions:

Since only Polish-issued documents are accepted as proof in Polish citizenship proceedings, you must provide original documents issued in Poland to demonstrate that your ancestor met the conditions listed above.

Conditions that apply to You

You must be a direct descendant of a Polish ancestor. For example, you must be a:

  • child
  • grandchild
  • great-grandchild
of a Polish citizen.

Conditions that apply to Your ancestors

Your ancestor(s) must have:

  • been born in Poland*
  • resided in Poland*
  • maintained Polish citizenship after 1920 and at the time of your birth*
*Please note: Different conditions may apply depending on your specific case.

Required Documents

As mentioned earlier, original Polish-issued documents are necessary to apply for Polish citizenship by descent. Once sufficient original documentation supporting your ancestral claim is provided, the citizenship application can be filed
Where available, relevant documents may include your ancestor’s:

  • ID or passport
  • Birth certificate
  • Marriage certificate
  • Divorce certificate
  • Death certificate or official death records
